From Odd Jobs at 15 to Meta's Top Table: Kunal Shah is WhatsApp's New Global Boss

Kunal Shah’s $900M Meta Leap: Meta has appointed CRED founder Kunal Shah as the new global head of WhatsApp, pulling off one of the biggest executive shakeups in tech. The announcement came alongside Meta’s massive $900 million investment into the Indian fintech unicorn, valuing it at $4.5 billion. Shah succeeds Will Cathcart, who is stepping down after a seven-year stint to focus on internal AI consumer products. For Shah, a philosophy graduate and MBA dropout who sold mehendi cones and pirated CDs at 15 to keep his bankrupt family afloat, the Silicon Valley appointment marks an extraordinary transition. He steps away from daily operations at CRED to scale the world’s largest messaging platform.

The deal gives Meta a rough 20% minority stake in CRED through primary and secondary share purchases. According to company officials, Meta will not gain access to CRED’s customer financial data.

In an internal note, Meta’s Chief Product Officer Chris Cox said the company searched for a leader who understood the “immense global product potential” of WhatsApp and could navigate incoming AI shifts.

Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg backed the appointment in a public statement. “Kunal built CRED into one of India’s most important technology companies,” Zuckerberg said, citing Shah’s “builder mentality and global perspective.”

At CRED’s offices, strategy and finance head Miten Sampat takes over immediately as interim CEO. The startup’s board is currently structuring a path toward an eventual public listing.

From South Mumbai Hustle to Global Tech

Shah’s track record departs from the standard IIT-IIM pipeline that defines most of India’s tech elite.

After his father’s business collapsed, a teenage Shah took up odd jobs across Mumbai. He delivered items, managed data entry, ran a cyber cafe, and tutored people in basic computing. His philosophy degree at Wilson College was chosen primarily because classes ran from 8 AM to 10 AM, leaving the rest of the day clear for work.

He later dropped out of an MBA program at Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, calling the structured format too rigid and overly focused on scoring marks rather than understanding markets.

Before starting CRED in 2018 with $1 million of his own capital, Shah co-founded the digital payments app FreeCharge, selling it to Axis Bank in 2017 for roughly $60 million.

What Lies Ahead

India is currently WhatsApp’s largest laboratory, counting over 500 million of the platform’s 3 billion global users.

The app is trying to convert its massive user base into a serious revenue driver through merchant ecosystems, enterprise tools, and business messaging. Interestingly, NPCI data for May 2026 placed WhatsApp Pay ninth in UPI transaction volumes—closely trailing CRED at eighth place.

Shah is expected to relocate to Meta’s headquarters in California. Reflecting on the appointment, Shah noted that while the platform has scaled significantly, the gap between what WhatsApp offers today and its full commercial potential remains vast.
