Boss’s simple responses to leave and WFH requests strike a chord online

A series of routine workplace messages between an employee and his manager has attracted attention online, with users highlighting the value of simple and supportive communication at work.

The exchanges were shared on Reddit’s r/IndianWorkplace by an employee who said he wanted to show a different side of workplace culture. The subreddit frequently features posts about difficult managers, workplace pressure and negative employee experiences.

In contrast, the screenshots shared by the employee showed his manager responding to requests for sick leave and work from home without unnecessary questions or pressure.

In one exchange, an employee informed the manager that a cough had worsened overnight despite feeling better the previous day. The employee said working from home would be more appropriate and apologised for the short notice. The manager approved the request and asked the employee to take care.

Another conversation involved an employee who began feeling unwell after returning from the office. After developing a fever, the employee informed the manager that medication had been taken and that their condition would be assessed the following day. The manager again responded with a brief message of concern.

A third employee requested to work from home after feeling exhausted following family commitments and said the commute to the office would be difficult. The manager approved the request without further discussion.

The employee who posted the screenshots said the conversations were intentionally ordinary. He explained that he was used to seeing examples of toxic management on the platform and wanted to share what normal manager-employee interactions could look like.

The post has drawn attention because of its simplicity. Rather than lengthy explanations or repeated follow-ups, the manager’s responses focused on acknowledging the requests and trusting employees to manage their circumstances.

The reactions highlight a broader workplace conversation around trust, flexibility and manager behaviour. For employees, supportive responses to everyday situations such as illness or personal commitments can influence how comfortable they feel communicating with their managers.

The episode also suggests that healthy workplace culture does not always involve elaborate initiatives. Sometimes, it can be reflected in how managers respond to ordinary employee needs.
