India’s technology job market is rapidly evolving as artificial intelligence (AI) transitions from experimental stages to widespread enterprise adoption, creating a significant shift in demand for specialised engineering roles. According to an analysis by CIEL HR, demand for Agentic AI Engineers experienced a sharp 260% increase in 2026 compared to 2025, marking the most significant rise among emerging technology roles tracked.Other AI-related roles also saw substantial growth, with demand for GenAI Solutions Architects and AI Product Owners each rising by 120%. LLM Engineers and MLOps Engineers also recorded strong growth, with demand increasing by 86.5% and 82.2% respectively. This indicates a clear reorientation of hiring priorities within the Indian tech sector towards professionals capable of building, deploying, and managing advanced AI systems.

AI’s Impact on Routine Tasks and Skill Gaps

Concurrently, AI is taking on a growing share of routine technology functions. CIEL HR estimates that AI can handle up to 70% of the workload for ticket resolution and report generation, and approximately 65% of test-case creation. This automation potential suggests a redefinition of roles rather than their elimination, allowing human workers to focus on exceptions, complex problem-solving, and judgment-heavy tasks.The emerging demand also highlights significant capability shortages within the existing talent pool. Skill gaps across critical areas like AI, cloud, and cybersecurity currently range from 38% to 61%. This pressure is compelling organisations to prioritise internal capability building and reskilling initiatives over sole reliance on external hiring.Aditya Narayan Mishra, MD & CEO, CIEL HR, noted, “AI is changing the value attached to different technology skills. The opportunity for organisations is to view this as a workforce transition, identifying where technology can take on repetitive work while building the skills needed for the next phase of growth.”

IT services companies in India are responding by implementing AI-focused training, role-based reskilling, cloud and certification programmes, and structured early-career initiatives. These programmes aim to equip existing professionals across delivery, infrastructure, support, and engineering with the capabilities needed for evolving technology demands.

Arjun Gupta, Founder & CEO, Courseplay, emphasised, “The workforce transition is not going to happen through hiring alone. Organisations will need to consider how existing talent can move into emerging skill areas as the nature of technology work changes. Reskilling and redeployment can help bridge some of the gap between the skills organisations have today and those they will need tomorrow.”

The analysis draws on a labour-market intelligence base covering over 450 million job postings, 30 million professional profiles, and 10,000 mapped skills, with data from March 2024 to May 2026, including forward-looking projections.
