Andhra Pradesh considers 2-day work-from-home plan for its workforce


The government of Andhra Pradesh is exploring the possibility of introducing a two-day work-from-home system in selected government departments as part of a wider austerity strategy aimed at reducing fuel consumption and limiting expenditure amid the ongoing West Asia conflict.
As part of the initiative, public representatives and government officials are expected to reduce the number of vehicles used in official convoys and increase the use of virtual meetings. A weekly ‘No Vehicle Friday’ initiative is also being planned to encourage reduced dependence on fuel-based transport.
The proposal was discussed during a State Cabinet meeting chaired by N Chandrababu Naidu, where officials were asked to assess whether remote- work arrangements could be implemented in certain wings of government offices. The move aligns with broader efforts to conserve resources following recent calls for fuel-saving measures across the country.
The state government is preparing a larger campaign under the “My Country, My Responsibility” initiative, which seeks to encourage public representatives, officials and citizens to adopt practices aimed at reducing energy use and supporting economic conservation efforts.
The Cabinet also discussed the possible economic impact of geopolitical developments on imports and exports.
The state is also considering broader sustainability initiatives. Government departments may be required to minimise fuel consumption by official vehicles and prioritise electric vehicles in future procurement plans. Authorities are also looking at expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the state.
Additional proposals include awareness campaigns promoting cycling and walking, encouraging educational institutions to observe ‘No Vehicle Days’, and reducing traffic congestion through better vehicle movement management.
The state administration is positioning the initiative as a long-term effort combining fiscal discipline, sustainability and resource conservation during a period of global uncertainty.
