Apple Announces Major Job Cuts in Siri and AI Teams Amid Major Restructuring, TechGig

Highlights

  • Apple cuts over 200 jobs in Siri, Vision Pro, and AI teams.
  • Vision Pro unit sees 100 roles eliminated, gaming and immersive video scaled back.
  • Siri team reorganised for new AI architecture, affecting 100 positions.
  • Restructuring aligns with focus on future smart glasses and AI development.

Apple is cutting more than 200 jobs across its Siri, Vision Pro, and artificial intelligence (AI) teams, according to a Bloomberg report. This move is part of a broader business reorganisation aimed at realigning resources around new devices and an updated AI strategy.

Approximately 100 positions are being eliminated from the Vision Pro organisation, with another roughly 100 roles cut across Siri and related software teams. The Intelligent Systems Experience team, responsible for AI-powered features across Apple devices, is also affected by these changes.

Vision Pro Reassessment

The Vision Pro organisation is undergoing a significant reduction in activity. Apple is largely shutting down its team focused on gaming for the headset and reducing the size of the group producing immersive video content. Producing immersive video content is costly, with an episode of a series potentially costing several million dollars to film.

While Apple plans to continue making some immersive videos, it will increasingly rely on outside studios for production. The company is also reassessing its approach to gaming on Vision Pro due to limited traction among gamers.

Despite these changes, Apple has assured employees that Vision Pro and its visionOS operating system will continue to be developed, with a new Vision Pro model still under consideration for release as early as the end of 2028.

Siri and AI Team Restructuring

The changes to Siri are directly linked to the development of its AI-focused version. Apple is rebuilding the assistant on a new technical architecture, which necessitates a shift in the required expertise within the team. This has led to the elimination of some existing positions, reallocation of resources, and the creation of new roles for the updated Siri.Similarly, the Intelligent Systems Experience team is being reorganised as Apple adjusts its strategy for developing AI capabilities across its device ecosystem, including the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Apple confirmed the job cuts, stating it is realigning teams “to evolve our business to deliver the best experiences for our users.”

The company added, “While we will create new roles as part of this change, it will also impact a limited number of existing roles. We are grateful to these team members for their contributions, and we are committed to supporting them throughout their transition, including opportunities to apply for other roles at Apple.”
