Bengaluru’s space technology ecosystem is adding a new capability for tracking objects around Earth, with a local startup unveiling an artificial intelligence-enabled optical sensor network designed to monitor activity in low Earth orbit. The technology could strengthen India’s ability to identify and track satellites and space debris as orbital traffic grows, making space situational awareness increasingly important for communications and other services.

The system combines optical sensors with AI-based processing to detect and classify objects moving across the night sky. Unlike radar-based systems, optical observation can provide useful information without transmitting signals, offering another layer of data for monitoring objects in orbit. Low Earth orbit has become increasingly crowded as satellite constellations expand. Satellites supporting broadband, navigation, Earth observation and communications now operate alongside older spacecraft and fragments created by previous missions. Even relatively small pieces of debris can pose a serious collision risk because of the high speeds involved. For India, stronger monitoring capabilities have implications beyond the space sector. Satellite-based services support weather forecasting, disaster management, telecommunications, navigation, agriculture and infrastructure planning. Any disruption to orbital assets can therefore have consequences that extend into everyday economic and public services. The Bengaluru-developed system is designed around a distributed network rather than relying on a single observation point.

Such an approach can potentially improve coverage by collecting observations from different locations and combining them through software. AI can then help process large volumes of observations more rapidly, identifying patterns that may be difficult to analyse manually. The technology also reflects a broader shift in Bengaluru’s innovation economy. The city has long concentrated expertise in software and information technology, while its space sector has expanded through a combination of established institutions, private companies and specialised engineering talent. Space situational awareness sits at the intersection of these capabilities, requiring expertise in optics, electronics, computing, data analysis and orbital science. However, monitoring alone cannot eliminate orbital risks. Reliable data must be integrated into wider systems that allow operators and authorities to assess potential collisions and make timely decisions. International coordination is also essential because satellites and debris routinely cross national boundaries. The environmental dimension is equally important. Earth’s orbital environment is finite, and continued growth in satellite deployments increases the need for responsible use of space.

Better tracking can support safer operations, reduce collision risks and help operators make informed decisions about spacecraft at the end of their useful lives. For Bengaluru, the development highlights how the city’s technology base is moving into increasingly specialised fields. As India’s space economy expands, technologies that improve the safety and sustainability of orbital infrastructure could become an important part of the country’s broader space ecosystem.
