Company introduces GPS-tracked work-from-home policy, staff push back

A Delhi-based company has rolled out a work-from-home policy that requires employees to keep GPS tracking on and remain inside the Delhi-NCR region.
The move comes after layoffs last month cut the workforce from 40 to 15. The company also shifted to a smaller office with just four seats. Under the new system, staff will rotate between working from office and home.
Employees initially welcomed the change, but frustration grew when management clarified the GPS condition. Attendance will only be marked if an employee’s location shows they are within Delhi-NCR.
Many workers had hoped to move to their hometowns while working remotely. That was barred. One employee shared on Reddit that even though initially the move felt promising it turned into disappointment when they were required to not leave Delhi-NCR in order to be marked present in the system.
The company has not given a detailed reason for the rule. Staff believe it is to ensure people can reach the office quickly if needed.
This case shows a bigger problem with remote work. If companies use tracking, WFH loses its freedom. Many workers value the trust and flexibility to live outside big cities. Turning remote work into constant monitoring defeats the whole purpose of working from home. It also raises questions about privacy at home. Employees feel the policy treats them like they cannot be trusted. If remote work only works under strict watch, many may choose to quit instead. Companies may end up losing good talent while trying to control where people sit.
