Delhi govt to withdraw work-from-home scheme, staggered office timings: What changes

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has withdrawn the work-from-home (WFH) and staggered timings arrangement on Wednesdays and Saturdays for government employees. The CM’s office cited the “normalisation of the geopolitical situation” as a reason behind the move.

The CM office had approved the withdrawal of the WFH arrangement on Thursday. A formal notification is expected to be issued on Saturday, July 2, as per ANI.

The timings for the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) offices have also been revised. GNTCD offices will now remain open from 10 am to 6:30 pm. There have been no revisions in the timings of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The Delhi government had put in place WFH, staggered timings and a slew of fuel-saving measures in May to ease the pressure on foreign exchange reserves as the war between the US and Iran raged on.

The Delhi government’s move for WFH and staggered timings came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for energy conservation.

Now, with global fuel prices at lower levels and a fragile peace between the US and Iran, the government has withdrawn its previous measures.

“Now that the geopolitical situation has practically normalised, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has approved withdrawal of Work from Home on Wednesdays & Saturdays. The order will be issued today. And staggered timings for GNCTD have been revised to 10 am to 6:30 am and for MCD it will remain the same, from 8:30 am to 5 pm,” the Chief Minister’s office said.

Along with the WFH mandate for two days of the week, the Delhi government had also put in place other austerity measures to curb fuel consumption.

A ‘Metro Monday’ initiative had encouraged ministers and senior government officials to use public transport. A one-year curb on foreign visits for ministers had also been announced. A six-month ban on buying of new petrol, CNG, diesel or hybrid vehicles was also implemented by the Delhi government.

Gupta had also asked citizens to observe a ‘No Vehicle Day’ earlier. Institutions had been asked to maximise online lectures and hearings.

Staggered timings were put in place for government employees to reduce traffic congestion and fuel consumption.
