From labour chowk to smartphone: Nagaland takes construction

DIMAPUR — For construction workers who traditionally wait at roadside labour chowks hoping someone will hire them for the day, finding work in Nagaland could soon become a little easier — through a smartphone.

The Department of Labour on Wednesday launched the Nagaland LabourChowk mobile application, a digital platform designed to connect construction workers with employers while bringing employment and welfare services closer to workers.

According to a DIPR update, Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen launched the app at the chief secretary’s conference hall in Kohima. The initiative has been developed by the Department of Labour through the Nagaland Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board.

The idea is to take the traditional labour chowk — where workers gather in search of employment — into the digital space.

Through the app, registered construction workers can look for employment opportunities, while employers can search for and connect with workers.

The platform will also provide access to welfare schemes and skill-development services.
