From unpaid work to Rs 1.15 crore: Techie shares his 13-year career journey
A 35-year-old tech professional has shared his remarkable career journey on Reddit, revealing how he went from an unpaid role in Delhi to earning around Rs 1.15 crore through an international client.
The cloud specialist, who graduated from a relatively lesser-known engineering college in Uttar Pradesh, said he built his career primarily on his BTech degree, technical skills, and professional experience.
FROM UNPAID WORK TO RS 70 LAKH OFFER
According to his post, he began his career with an organisation in Delhi, where he worked for less than a year without a salary. He then moved to Bengaluru at 6 lakh per annum (LPA), staying there for two years.
His next role paid Rs 7 LPA initially, eventually rising to Rs 9 LPA over 4.7 years. He then moved to another organisation, where his salary grew from 17 LPA to 35 LPA over five years.
He later received an offer worth Rs 70 LPA in Bengaluru, although he chose not to join the company. He said the offer nevertheless made him realise his actual market value.
His next role, working with an international client, took his earnings to around Rs 1.15 crore over nearly two years.
SIDE GIGS AND ONLINE PRESENCE HELPED
The professional also revealed that he earned around Rs 20,000 through side gigs during the early years of his career. He said his online presence, particularly on LinkedIn, helped him get approached for side projects and additional income.
Asked how he managed to switch jobs and attract opportunities, he advised professionals to build a strong online presence and “make yourself visible.”
He said his BTech was his primary degree and that most of his career opportunities came because of it. He later completed a master’s degree, but said it was not particularly relevant to the job he eventually secured.
FROM 16-HOUR DAYS TO BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE
The techie said his current work-life balance is good and that he generally does not open his laptop after 5 pm unless there is a production issue. However, he admitted that his career was not always this relaxed and that he had previously worked 16-hour days.
Outside work, he said he remains active as a local club-level cricket player, highlighting the importance of maintaining hobbies alongside a demanding tech career.
