Google Cloud Lays Off Staff Amid AI Reinvestment Push, TechGig


Google has initiated layoffs within its Cloud division, impacting staff across various units, including its prominent Threat Intelligence Group and cybersecurity firm Mandiant.
The company stated these reductions are part of an ongoing evaluation of internal structures to better align with evolving industry demands and reinvest in growth areas like artificial intelligence (AI) development.
The job cuts, which have unfolded over the past two weeks, mark the latest round of workforce reductions across the Big Tech sector. This trend sees companies redirecting resources towards AI initiatives, as reported by Business Insider.
Among the impacted teams is Google’s Threat Intelligence Group, one of its top security research units, known for publishing reports on hacker activity and global cyber threats.
Employees from Mandiant, the cybersecurity firm Google acquired in 2022, and other parts of Google Cloud were also affected, with some individuals posting about the cuts on professional networking platforms.
A Google spokesperson confirmed the layoffs, stating, “We regularly evaluate our internal structures to ensure we are best positioned to meet the evolving demands of our customers and the industry.”
A person familiar with the decision added that Google cited the need to reinvest in growth areas such as AI development as justification for the move.
These layoffs at Google follow similar moves across the tech industry. Meta cut 10% of its workforce last month, while Coinbase and Block have also used AI investments to justify job reductions earlier this year.Cybersecurity firms have not been spared, with Cloudflare laying off more than 1,100 employees in May as it prepared for what executives termed the “agentic AI era.”
However, Google AI CEO Demis Hassabis has expressed a contrasting view on the strategy of cutting engineers to ride the AI wave. He said that when developers become three or four times more productive, the smart move is to do three or four times more work, not reduce headcount.
Hassabis described treating AI gains as a reason to shrink the workforce as a “failure of nerve dressed up as strategy,” adding that he would gladly welcome laid-off talent for his own projects, which range from lab drug discovery to game design.
