One such app, Pronto, claims it has reached around 15,000 bookings a day within months of launch, with strong demand in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. The model is gaining traction among younger users who prefer quick, app-based solutions over traditional hiring methods.

Higher Earnings, But With New Pressures

For many workers, these platforms offer better income compared to traditional jobs. Seema Kumari, who previously worked in a garment factory, says her earnings have improved after joining a platform. “I now make around 20,000 rupees a month,” she says.

However, the increase in income comes with added pressure. Workers depend heavily on customer ratings, which directly affect future bookings. Even small issues can impact their visibility on the app.

Delays beyond a worker’s control can also lead to penalties. “We often have to walk from one location to another. Sometimes security guards hold us up at the gate while they verify our entry into the building,” she says. “That makes us late, and then we are penalised – even if it is by five minutes.”

This rigid structure leaves little room for flexibility.

Is the System Fair?

“These are people, not automated systems.” Workers often travel between locations and face delays that are outside their control. Despite this, they are expected to meet strict timelines.

While platforms offer some benefits like training and digital payments, many challenges remain. Workers often lack basic protections such as paid leave, pensions, or strong legal safeguards.

In some cases, even basic needs become an issue. Workers report difficulties finding restrooms between jobs or getting time to eat. “There are days when I don’t even get time to eat. It has started taking a toll on my health,” Seema says.

These realities highlight the gap between convenience for users and conditions for workers.

Balancing Opportunity and Exploitation

The platform model is reshaping India’s domestic work sector by introducing structure and scale. It offers opportunities for higher income and more consistent work.

At the same time, it shifts control to digital systems that dictate pace, performance, and pay. Critics argue that while the system is becoming more organised, it still lacks worker protections.

As demand grows, the challenge will be to balance efficiency with fairness.
