Kerala’s ‘Work Near Home’ Revolution: Bridging Rural Talent with Global Opportunities

Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal announced the launch of the state’s groundbreaking ‘work near home’ (WNH) initiative, set to commence on January 19, in Kottarakkara. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the first WNH centre, marking a significant step toward connecting rural talent with international job markets.

In a move to decentralize employment opportunities, the initiative will be implemented in collaboration with Technopark and Cyberpark. The refurbished BSNL office building will serve as the pilot WNH centre, offering a ‘plug-and-play’ environment for professionals, thereby reducing the necessity to travel to larger cities for work.

The project’s broader aim is to generate five lakh village-based jobs throughout Kerala, benefiting educated youth and homemakers eager to re-enter the workforce. Expansion plans include new centres in Kalamassery, Ramanattukara, and Taliparamba, with the support of an interest-free loan from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board to bolster infrastructure and ensure premium facilities at affordable prices.
