Microsoft announces 4,800 job cuts amid restructuring efforts, TechGig

Microsoft has announced plans to eliminate approximately 4,800 jobs, representing about 2.1% of its global workforce, as part of a significant restructuring initiative aimed at aligning its resources with evolving business priorities.
The layoffs will notably impact the gaming division, with around 3,200 positions being cut at Xbox, including about 1,600 immediate layoffs.
Amy Coleman, Microsoft’s chief people officer, clarified in a message to employees that the layoffs are not a result of artificial intelligence (AI) replacing jobs. “I also want to be direct that the roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI,” Coleman stated. She acknowledged that while AI is changing how work is performed, it does not directly correlate with the current job cuts.
Coleman highlighted that Microsoft’s ongoing transformation requires the company to adapt to a rapidly changing technology landscape. She noted, “Our customers are navigating this same shift, and they’re counting on us to help them through it. We can’t do that well unless we’re doing it ourselves.” The restructuring is intended to enhance customer value and better align resources with long-term goals.
The layoffs in the Xbox division come after significant investments, including Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, as the company seeks to improve its competitive position against rivals like Sony PlayStation and Nintendo.
Despite these efforts, Microsoft has struggled to close the competitive gap in the gaming market. The restructuring reflects a broader strategy to reposition the gaming business for improved performance, even as major tech firms continue to invest heavily in AI and cloud infrastructure.
