The tech hiring landscape is currently undergoing a significant transformation, characterised by a “flight to quality” rather than a widespread hiring freeze, according to industry experts. Companies are increasingly selective, focusing on specialised skills and implementing measures to filter out AI-generated applications.

Chris Wasserman, CEO of Wasserman Talent Solutions, described the current environment as “weird,” noting a contraction in traditional areas alongside growth in innovative businesses. Judy Price, Vice President of Client Development at Humans Doing, emphasised that companies are fiercely competing for high-impact revenue generators and core technical builders, with every new role directly tied to ROI, revenue, or product delivery.

AI’s Dual Impact on Hiring

AI is playing a dual role in this evolving scenario. While it helps companies like PitchGhost research salaries, analyse job descriptions, and develop candidate scorecards, significantly reducing work time, it has also led to a deluge of poor and fraudulent applications.

Jeremy Carter, founder-in-residence at PackPay, noted that many applications for engineering roles were indistinguishable, all appearing AI-written. In response, he shifted to asking applicants to submit videos demonstrating their built projects.

Companies are also assessing whether they face a “capacity problem” solvable by AI and automation or a “process problem” requiring new hires for strategic thinking, leadership, and complex decision-making, as highlighted by Cassidy Stallings, Sr. Director of People Operations at EyeQ Monitoring. This shift means that technical ability evaluation is moving from just being an “expert coder” to someone who can efficiently use and adapt to evolving tools to produce required code.

Strategies and Skill Demands

To combat the influx of unqualified applications, some early-stage companies are moving away from public postings, relying more on referrals and direct outreach. While larger companies adopt AI screening systems, Wasserman cautions that these tools might miss qualified candidates whose experience doesn’t fit predefined patterns. He also noted that candidates still seek genuine human interaction, which can be an advantage for early-stage companies.

There is strong demand for experienced professionals skilled in AI, data, and cybersecurity. The traditional organisational structure with a broad base of junior employees is shifting towards a diamond shape, as AI takes over some task-oriented work.
