What are the high-paying jobs almost nobody wants? Reddit users answer
A discussion on Reddit about well-paying jobs that attracted very few applicants because the work sounded unpleasant or unusual prompted social media users to share careers they believed offered strong salaries despite difficult working conditions.
The conversation began after a Reddit user asked, “What is a high paying job that almost nobody applies for because the work sounds unpleasant or weird?”
One of the most-upvoted responses came from a user who said several blue-collar jobs offered good incomes, but fewer people wanted them because they preferred office environments.
“I switched from a desk job to become an electrician and have been enjoying it a lot more, but I’ve definitely been missing the air conditioning this summer,” the user wrote.
Others agreed that the work came with physical challenges, while another person claimed plumbing no longer offered the same financial rewards unless workers ran their own businesses instead of working for private equity-backed employers.
Air traffic controller, underwater welder, correctional officer, lighthouse keeper, merchant marine, wind turbine technician and military officer were among the careers repeatedly mentioned during the discussion. Several users said the jobs paid well but involved long hours, hazardous conditions, extended time away from home or demanding responsibilities.
One user also suggested mortuary work and biohazard cleanup, saying younger people were needed in the profession. Another mentioned technicians who climbed wind turbines for repairs, adding that the pay looked attractive even though the work appeared intimidating.
A separate user, however, shared an unpleasant experience involving a biohazard cleanup company after a roommate’s death. The user alleged that workers stole personal belongings, including a laptop, and later used it without permission, making an already traumatic situation even worse.
Others pointed to nuclear maintenance work, asbestos removal, firefighting, nursing in busy hospitals, social work in high-risk areas and power line maintenance as careers that offered substantial earnings in exchange for difficult or risky working conditions.

The discussion attracted several reactions from social media users, who continued suggesting careers they believed combined high salaries with physically demanding, risky or unconventional work.
One user wrote, “The dirtier the job the more reliably the checks clear.”
Another commented, “Window Installers; learn to cap aluminum and you could be making absolute bank.”

These suggestions added to a growing list of careers that users believed offered attractive salaries despite demanding, risky or unconventional working conditions.
