As the actor, writer and director celebrates his birthday on July 7, his rise from taking up odd jobs and working behind the scenes on film sets to winning a National Film Award and creating the Kantara wonder remains a remarkable story of determination and passion.
Born as Prashanth Shetty on July 7, 1983, Rishab grew up in Keradi village in Karnataka’s Udupi district. He completed his schooling in Kundapura before moving to Bengaluru, where he pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree. His interest in performance began with Yakshagana, the traditional theatre form of coastal Karnataka. Performing in Yakshagana plays helped shape his artistic understanding and later became an important influence on his storytelling.

Before fame arrived, Rishab took up several jobs to support himself while trying to build a career in films. Reports say he sold tea powder and water bottles and also worked in hotels and real estate. During his early struggle, he even worked as a driver and office boy. At the same time, he continued chasing his filmmaking dream. He studied film direction and gradually entered the industry from the ground level, working as a clap boy, spot boy and assistant director before getting larger opportunities.
Rishab’s early acting journey included roles in films such as Tuglak, Lucia and Ulidavaru Kandanthe. These appearances helped him gain experience and establish himself in the Kannada film industry. In 2016, he made his directorial debut with Ricky. The same year, he directed Kirik Party, which became a major box office success and proved to be an important turning point in his career. He later directed Sarkari Hi. Pra. Shaale, Kasaragodu, Koduge: Ramanna Rai, which earned critical appreciation and won the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film. Alongside directing, Rishab continued to explore acting. He appeared in films including Bell Bottom, Hero and Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana. Rooted in the culture, folklore and traditions of coastal Karnataka, the film connected with audiences far beyond the Kannada-speaking market and became a major pan-India success. His performance earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor at the 70th National Film Awards. The recognition marked a major milestone in a career that had begun with small jobs and behind-the-scenes work on film sets. Rishab returned to the world of Kantara with Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 in 2025. Once again serving as actor, writer and director, he expanded the mythology and world of the franchise. The film became another major commercial success and further strengthened Rishab’s position as one of Indian cinema’s prominent actor-filmmakers.

Away from films, Rishab is married to Pragathi Shetty. The couple tied the knot in 2017 and have two children, Ranvit and Raadya. Despite his growing fame, Rishab has often remained closely connected to his roots and family life.
