Gurugram Police have advised firms to let employees work from home as rain triggers waterlogging, traffic snarls citywide; IMD issues orange alert.

Gurugram’s district administration has advised corporate offices and private establishments to implement ‘work from home’ for two days — Thursday and Friday (August 6-7) — as the district recorded 97mm of rainfall in 24 hours and the IMD’s orange alert raised fears of further waterlogging and traffic jams.

The advisory, issued by District Disaster Management Authority chairman and district magistrate Uttam Singh, also aims to ease traffic pressure and allow uninterrupted road and drainage repair work.

The administration’s advisory came alongside a similar appeal from Gurugram Police, which had urged institutions to allow employees to work from home and asked residents to avoid unnecessary vehicle movement to keep roads clear for ambulances, fire brigades and other emergency services. This is the second consecutive day of disruption for the city, with 97mm of rain having already caused waterlogging and power outages on Wednesday.

This is the second bout of disruption in as many days — Gurugram had already recorded 97mm of rain within 12 hours on Wednesday, with Tuesday evening’s showers having caused waterlogging and power outages across major parts of the city as well. Rain resumed around 3.15am on Thursday and continued through the morning, residents said, inundating several localities and slowing traffic on key stretches as the office rush began.

Why Has Gurugram Police Asked For Work From Home?

In an advisory posted on X, Gurugram Police said reduced movement of “unnecessary vehicles” would help ensure smooth traffic flow and support uninterrupted movement of ambulances, fire brigades and other emergency services.

“Your cooperation is expected in the interest of citizens’ safety and public welfare,” the force said, urging residents to drive with caution.

How Much Rain Has The District Received?

According to the District Information & Public Relations Officer (DIPRO), Gurugram, Sohna tehsil recorded the highest rainfall in the district — 110mm — in the 24 hours between 8am on August 5 and 8am on August 6, followed by Gurugram city at 97mm.

The DIPRO advisory urged citizens to step out only when necessary during heavy rain, avoid waterlogged stretches, and follow administration guidelines.

How Badly Has Traffic Been Hit?

A long traffic jam has built up on Sohna Road, with vehicles moving from Sohna towards Gurugram badly affected after waterlogging near the Badshahpur Bijli Board caused the snarl, leaving commuters on this stretch struggling to get through.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, snarls were also witnessed at Narsinghpur, Manesar and Bilaspur on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway through the early morning, with vehicle movement slowing further between IFFCO Chowk and Rajiv Chowk as office traffic built up.

Waterlogging at the low-lying Narsinghpur stretch congested both carriageways, with tailbacks extending to the Cloverleaf interchange on one side and Hero Honda Chowk on the other.

Traffic also moved slowly on the Jaipur-bound carriageway at Manesar, while Bilaspur saw severe jams on both carriageways, prompting police deployment to regulate movement; service lanes along the stretch were packed as well, HT stated.

A scheduled house meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram, set for Thursday, was called off because of the rain.

Where Has Waterlogging Been Reported?

Waterlogging was reported from the Surat Nagar-Dhanwapur revenue road, Sectors 102, 69, 67, 49, 43, 17A, 10 and 5, Ashok Vihar, Sunset Boulevard Road, Sheetla Mata Road and South City-1.

Vikas Hooda, president of the residents’ welfare association of Ashok Vihar Phase 3, was quoted by HT as saying residential lanes in the area remained heavily waterlogged despite repeated assurances from civic and government officials that the problem would be resolved. “It is impossible for residents to step outside because of the waterlogging,” he said.

Savita Devi, a resident of Sector 46, said even moderate rainfall brought the city to a standstill. “Roads and residential lanes are presently waterlogged, traffic has come to a crawl and Gurugram virtually comes to a standstill during the monsoon,” she was quoted.

Has Power Supply Been Affected?

Officials of Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (DHBVN) said ground teams had been placed on standby to respond immediately to outages. Waterlogging had caused sparking and short circuits in several areas, officials said, forcing authorities to snap power supply as a precautionary measure.
