A new cultural movement has emerged in Mumbai, redefining the meaning and the way people socialise. Gen Z and early millennials have been ditching pubs to spend quality time at cafes. These days, cafes offer cozy spaces, good music, and exotic meals, which tick all the check boxes in Gen Z’s list. Its impact is quieter, but powerful. Most women and Queers feel safer in cafes, having an opportunity to stay outside longer than usual in a secure environment, unlike pubs. The new culture has also taken away the pressure of intoxication or late-night chaos. This gradual shift also indicates less safety risk among Gen Z.

Late-Night Culture Loses Popularity

An ideal time to go to a club is after 8 in the evening, when people are too tired from their day. Meanwhile, people can go to the cafe for breakfast, brunch, lunch, an evening snack, or dinner. And this would allow them to eat, talk, and enjoy the vibe. This means people do not have to wait till late at night to spill the beans in front of their friends. They can talk for hours without yelling or repeating themselves because the music is too loud. People are choosing afternoon and early evening hours, which allow them to return home before late-night.

Conscious About Expenses

Mayank Gupta, 28, Deputy Manager at a Mumbai firm, shared that it is better at cafes, because you are conscious of your expenditure. He shared, “After a few drinks at the pub, you stop thinking about expenses and end up ordering more alcohol or snacks (which is absurdly expensive too). But at cafes, you are content and manage your orders mindfully”.

Going to a club costs a group nearly Rs 2,000- Rs 4,000 per head. But a cafe treat would cover the overall expense at the same cost. The math is simple: more coffee, less regret. You can hang out every day, instead of squeezing a single ‘big night’ into your wallet.

Coffee Over Cocktails

Sakshi Golani, 26, said that she enjoys non-alcoholic beverages more. Golani said alcohol is more harmful than coffee. “While coffee helps you to become productive, alcohol slows down the mind, eventually slowing down the entire day. People have become more health-conscious nowadays, and they care more about their gut health”.

According to a NielsenIQ study, 2025, nearly 30 percent of Asia-Pacific consumers are drinking less alcohol in comparison to 2024, a Mumbai Mirror report added.

Safe for Women

Several women highlighted that cafes are less worrisome. “When visiting a cafe, a woman doesn’t usually have to worry about her safety; there’s no fear of someone spiking her drink or stress about how she’ll get home safely late at night. In contrast, these concerns are among the biggest challenges women face when going to a club. So Cafes are a win for me,” said Priya, working in Mumbai-based IT firm.

Work from Home Away from Home

People doing freelance or work from home jobs are eventually tired of looking at the same wall daily. Therefore, they look for cafes that allow them to sit for hours without disturbance so they can attend online meetings, seminars, workshops, and talk to clients.

Weekend, Vibes and Social Media

People are still planning their weekends outside their homes, but restaurants and cafés remain the most popular hangout spots. With multiple options in food, drinks, and music, the Gen Z crowd finds these places more comfortable and inviting. The appealing ambience, good music, and aesthetic interiors create the perfect setting to relax — and of course, to share memories on social media.
