As Delhi-NCR reels under severe weather, Gurugram has advised corporate offices and private institutions to encourage employees to work from home on August 8. The advisory came after the city recorded 60 milimetre (mm) of rainfall between 8 am and 5 pm on August 7, raising concerns over waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruption to daily movement.

The advisory was issued by Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh, who also heads the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). The administration said the move would help ease pressure on the roads and allow agencies to carry out water drainage, repair and restoration work more efficiently.

Residents have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution as several parts of the city could witness waterlogging and traffic disruptions.

The latest advisory follows a similar appeal issued by the Gurugram Police on August 6, when citizens were urged to work from home after heavy rainfall led to severe traffic congestion across the city.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast suggests that cloudy skies will hover over the city and it might witness light-to-moderate showers throughout the day on August 8.

WHY HAS GURUGRAM ISSUED WORK-FROM-HOME?

According to the district administration, allowing employees to work from home is aimed at reducing unnecessary movement on roads and helping authorities carry out water drainage, repair and restoration work without additional traffic pressure.

Corporate offices and private establishments have therefore been advised to encourage employees to work remotely on August 8.

The administration has also appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution while commuting, particularly in areas vulnerable to waterlogging and traffic disruptions.

The advisory is part of the administration’s efforts to manage the impact of heavy rainfall and ensure that essential civic and restoration operations can continue smoothly.

Meanwhile, on Friday, heavy rain lashed Delhi, inundating roads, triggering widespread waterlogging and bringing traffic to a crawl across the national capital.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city is likely to witness light showers throughout Saturday and Sunday.

The downpour disrupted normal life, flooding several low-lying areas and slowing movement on major arterial roads. Emergency teams also responded to incidents of house collapses and fallen trees, while commuters faced lengthy delays as waterlogged stretches and traffic snarls disrupted movement in several parts of the capital.
