IT Employees Body Urges Centre To Encourage WFH Wherever Feasible
Despite the appeal of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prioritise work from home for curbing fuel consumptiom, IT industry is unlikely to revisit stricter office attendance mandates, according to a report of Moneycontrol.
Firms are expected to continue opt for hybrid model, which may have stabilize in the past three years following the disruption of Covid-19-led lockdowns. The MC report said that firms spent nearly three years for a stability that keeps a balance between employee flexibility and client requirements and operational needs.
PM Modi has appealed to citizens to take some measures, including work from home, avoiding personal transport, purchasing gold for a year, among others, to combat against the West Asia crisis.
The MC report citing industry executives, said that the sector has already built flexibility into its current operating models, making any broad reversal to tighter office mandates unlikely.
Meanwhile, industry body NASSCOM said on Monday that India’s technology sector continues to follow established hybrid work models, with companies deciding work-from-home and office attendance policies based on business needs, client requirements and employee roles.
The statement comes at a time when major IT firms had only recently succeeded in bringing employees back to offices for at least two to three days a week, after facing prolonged pushback from workers who had grown used to pandemic-era remote working arrangements.
The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) on Monday urged the Centre to ask IT and IT-enabled services (ITES) companies to implement work from home (WFH) wherever operationally feasible, citing fuel conservation and reduced travel needs.
In a letter addressed to Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, the employee body said the move would support national efforts to cut unnecessary fuel consumption and ease pressure on transport infrastructure.
NITES referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal encouraging citizens and organisations to adopt measures such as virtual meetings, reduced travel and work from home amid global geopolitical tensions and concerns around fuel use.
The association described the Prime Minister’s message as “a national call for collective responsibility” and said the IT sector was well-positioned to contribute.
