Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday described the conclusion of the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement as a historic milestone, saying it would be remembered as a defining moment in the shared history of India and the European Union.

In a post on X, Modi said he, along with European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, was “delighted to announce” the finalisation of the agreement, calling it a landmark step in bilateral relations.

Modi said the India-EU FTA would strengthen economic ties, create jobs for the youth, open new opportunities for businesses, foster shared prosperity, and help build stronger global supply chains.

Calling it a deal between the world’s second-largest and fourth-largest economies, the Prime Minister said the agreement promises to create unprecedented opportunities, open new avenues for growth and cooperation, and benefit the global community at large.

Highlighting its broader impact, Modi said the agreement would help generate quality jobs in key sectors and enable greater mobility for youth, professionals, students and researchers. He added that the deal would unlock the potential of the digital age, foster innovation and further strengthen economic ties for mutual growth.

The Prime Minister said the agreement with the EU, India’s largest free trade agreement to date, would bring substantial benefits to the country’s 1.4 billion people. He said it would make access to European markets easier for Indian farmers and small industries, create new opportunities in manufacturing and further deepen cooperation between the services sectors of both sides.

“Together, India and the EU are moving ahead with trust and ambition towards a prosperous as well as sustainable future,” Modi said, highlighting the strategic and economic significance of the pact.
