A woman’s post about working remotely from Udaipur for a UK-based firm has sparked a wider conversation about what modern work really looks like. While many professionals continue to move to big cities in search of better opportunities, her experience highlighted how remote jobs are allowing people to build international careers without leaving their hometowns.

Her post also reignited the debate around whether working from smaller cities means missing out on the “real world.” While some praised the flexibility and lower living costs that come with remote work, others argued that working from home for long periods can have its own challenges.

She Questioned What “Real Work” Means

In her post on X, the woman shared details about her work life and why she does not miss living in a metro city.

“I work remotely from Udaipur for a UK-based law and corporate finance firm. Our major clients are in London. My work crosses time zones. My invoices are in pounds. My commute is twelve steps from my bedroom to my desk. People ask if I feel “cut off” from the real world working from a small city.”

“But what do they mean by real world. Because the work is real. The output is real. The income is real. The only thing missing is the traffic and the Rs 30,000 rent for a 1BHK I’d share with two strangers. I think I’m okay,” she wrote.

Her post resonated with many users who related to the benefits of remote work, especially the savings on rent and commuting time.

The post received a range of responses, with some calling it an ideal setup and others sharing caution based on their own experiences.

A user wrote, “Living the dream. Hope they aren’t selling you short on salary bcs you work from home, i guess menial salary in pounds should be sufficient for the most part.”

Another commented, “By real world they meant being stuck in endless traffic, long work hours in office, office politics, harassment from boss, colleagues and fellow commuters, exorbitant rent, facing life threatening pollution of big cities etc etc.”

“It feels good until it doesn’t. Been working remotely for 8 years now, but now I won’t recommend anyone to work from home. You can work remotely but just don’t work from home. Go to a coworking space/cafe and work from there. Working alongside other people elevates you in more ways you can think of. I have seen many people’s careers getting stagnated because of working from home,” a person said.

“Nowadays people don’t love this, they want hustle like, traffic, 9-5, kich-kich, other things, stay away from these kind of people who think, that hustle working is real work, & other works are Fake,” a different person said.
