Rs 35 LPA Bengaluru job vs Rs 26.5 LPA WFH: The salary gap looks tempting, but the real calculation goes far beyond your paycheck

For many professionals in India’s tech industry, choosing between a higher salary in Bengaluru and the comfort of a permanent work-from-home job has become a common dilemma. While a bigger pay package looks attractive on paper, relocation also brings higher rent, daily commute, and other expenses. A recent Reddit discussion has once again put this debate in the spotlight, with hundreds of users weighing the trade-offs between career growth and financial comfort.

The discussion started after a Reddit user asked whether it made sense to leave a permanent work-from-home job paying ₹26.5 lakh fixed salary for a product-based company in Bengaluru offering ₹35 lakh fixed.

The user said they are 30 years old, have no dependents and currently save around ₹20,000-30,000 a month after expenses. They also shared that the new company offers better learning opportunities and long-term career growth. However, they were unsure whether an ₹8.5 lakh increase was enough to offset Bengaluru’s higher cost of living.
The user also mentioned that their current employer might offer another salary hike if they resigned, but they had already accepted a counteroffer around one-and-a-half years ago and did not want to repeat the same situation.

Many users said Bengaluru offers better long-term opportunities

Several Reddit users felt that the salary difference alone should not be the deciding factor. Instead, they pointed to the career advantages that often come with working in a major technology hub.One user wrote, “Lol, good suggestions. On a serious note: The Bangalore 35LPA offer will help you bag a better switch next time.”
Another commenter believed future salary growth mattered more than immediate savings, writing, “Think about next role, You will get hikes on 35LPA when you switch next time.”A different user also felt being in Bengaluru could lead to faster career progression, saying, “You need more in-person guidance, colleagues, etc to get fun from the workplace too. If I were you, you would be better off going to Bangalore, as you will get a switch to 50 LPA within a year or two while staying there easily.”

Others also argued that a reputed product company could become a stepping stone for better roles later.

Others felt work from home still offers better value

Not everyone agreed that moving would be financially beneficial. Many users said the higher salary could be largely absorbed by rent, commuting and everyday expenses in Bengaluru.

One Reddit user commented, “U would save more by wfh. The difference is not worth it for life in BLR. However, if u want to switch in BLR, after a year, u can find more job opportunities, which may not be possible by wfh.”

Another simply wrote, “Wfh. Save money at home. No need to get stuck in Bangalore traffic.”

A different commenter highlighted quality-of-life concerns instead of salary.

Another user added that after taxes, the actual salary difference would shrink further and that remote work could still make better financial sense unless career networking was the top priority.
