In a major step towards protecting the rights of platform based workers, the Telangana government has received approval for its gig workers law, offering long awaited relief to delivery personnel and cab drivers across the state.

The legislation, titled Telangana Platform Based Gig Workers 2026, has been cleared by the Governor and is set to be formally notified on Labour Day. With this, lakhs of workers engaged in app based services will gain legal recognition and protection for the first time.

The move is expected to address long standing concerns faced by gig workers, including low earnings, high work pressure and lack of social security. Officials said the law will ensure access to accident insurance, health coverage and other welfare benefits aimed at improving working conditions.

To ensure smooth implementation, the government has already begun consultations with aggregator companies and worker representatives. These discussions will focus on critical aspects such as working hours, grievance redressal systems and the creation of a welfare fund.

Authorities indicated that detailed guidelines will be issued within the next ten to fifteen days, laying out clear rules for both companies and workers. The aim is to make sure the law is not limited to policy but is effectively implemented on the ground.

The new framework is also expected to bring more accountability to platform based companies, with provisions to channel a portion of service fees into welfare schemes for workers. Officials believe this will create a more balanced system that supports both growth of the gig economy and the wellbeing of its workforce.
