Amid rising concerns over crude oil prices, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently appealed to Indians to reduce fuel consumption. He urged companies and employees to adopt work-from-home practices wherever possible in order to save petrol and diesel. The Prime Minister’s remarks came at a time when global oil prices are witnessing sharp volatility due to tensions in West Asia. Following the PM’s appeal, the Uttar Pradesh government is now preparing to take a major step. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called for work-from-home arrangements twice a week and asked departments to reduce unnecessary fuel usage.

The Chief Minister on Tuesday directed officials to remove unnecessary vehicles from official convoys. He also ordered a 50% reduction in the number of vehicles used by ministers, including his own convoy, with immediate effect. The move is being seen as part of broader austerity measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption amid the deepening West Asia crisis and rising pressure on India’s import bill.

Push for work from home culture

The Uttar Pradesh government has advised departments and offices to encourage a work-from-home culture wherever possible. According to the official statement, workplaces with a large number of employees may be asked to implement work-from-home for two days a week through a state-level advisory.

Focus on public transport

The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of using PNG, Metro services and public transport. He urged people to prefer buses operated by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation and reduce private vehicle usage to save fuel.

Virtual meetings to be encouraged

The government has also directed departments to conduct seminars, workshops and official meetings virtually as much as possible. Around 50% of internal meetings at the State Secretariat and various Directorates may also be shifted to virtual mode in the coming days.
