India Plans UPI-Like EV Charging Network for Seamless Access Across Stations

India is planning a unified electric vehicle charging network that would allow EV users to locate, access and pay at any public charging station regardless of the operator, similar to how the Unified Payments Interface transformed digital payments. The proposal is expected to be discussed at a high-level meeting in Bengaluru chaired by Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy, with participation from automakers, charging firms, utilities and state officials.

The move aims to solve fragmentation in India’s EV charging ecosystem, particularly for electric scooters and three-wheelers, where different manufacturers currently use proprietary charging systems. While electric cars have largely adopted the CCS2 standard, the newer Light Electric Combined Charging System (LECCS) or Type 7 connector is emerging as a common standard for smaller EVs, helping improve interoperability across brands and charging networks.

The government is backing the transition through the Rs 10,900 crore PM E-DRIVE scheme, which includes Rs 2,000 crore for public charging and battery-swapping infrastructure. State-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited is also developing a unified “super app” that will offer real-time charger availability, booking and payment features across stations. Officials say the next phase of India’s EV expansion will focus not just on adding chargers, but ensuring seamless nationwide access for all EV owners.
