A software engineer’s decision to quit a Rs 33 LPA job without another offer surprised many, but what happened after a short break has sparked a wider debate online.

A software engineer’s career decision has started a discussion online after he chose peace of mind over a bigger salary. Instead of staying in a stressful job that paid Rs 33 lakh per year, he resigned without having another offer in hand.

The story was shared by founder Vanesh Mali on X. According to him, his friend eventually accepted a new role that paid Rs 29 lakh per year. Even though it came with a Rs 4 lakh pay cut, the engineer says he is much happier because the new job gives him flexibility and a better work-life balance.

Months Of Stress Led To One Decision

Vanesh Mali said his friend had been working in an office-based IT job with a package of Rs 33 lakh per annum. However, the engineer had been unhappy for more than six months because of the heavy workload.

He wanted to switch jobs but found it difficult to prepare for interviews while managing his daily work. Mali explained that another challenge was the two-month notice period.

According to him, many companies wanted candidates who could join immediately, making the job search even harder. After months of frustration, the engineer decided to resign without waiting for another offer.

He Took A Short Break before trying again

Instead of jumping straight into another job search, he took five days off. According to Mali, he spent that time relaxing with his family and children instead of worrying about work or interviews.

Once the break was over, he updated his resume, started preparing regularly and applied for jobs that matched his interests. The process wasn’t easy.

He was rejected by three companies before finally receiving an offer from the fourth. The new company offered him a package of Rs 29 lakh per year. It also allowed him to work from home and visit the office only when required.

Mali said his friend accepted the offer because he felt it was the right company for him.

Why He Accepted A Lower Salary

Mali said the decision had nothing to do with money. According to him, his friend wanted more personal time, more time with his family and a less stressful life.

“He was looking for self time. He was looking for family time. He was looking for peaceful life at certain level. He took a risk of quitting current job without having offer in hand. But now he smiles and says ‘I did what I felt right. And I am happy with my decision’.”

The post received plenty of reactions from X users. A person wrote, “It’s not always about money; sometimes peace is also required.”

Another said, “That’s exactly what people are scared to do. If you don’t have savings for 2-3 months of unemployment, you won’t risk applying for jobs after leaving.”

A person felt experienced professionals usually find new opportunities more easily. Responding to that comment, Mali said, “In today’s market conditions, this is a little risky. But yes depends more on confidence and skills.”

Another user felt the biggest takeaway was the engineer’s satisfaction with his choice. “As he said, ‘I did what I felt right. And I am happy with my decision’, this is the line we should look at, not work from home, less package, peace of mind etc, everyone has their own priority if they achieve it, they are always happy.”
