What would you do if you lost your job in the morning and were offered a new one by the same company before the day ended? In a brutal reminder of how tough the Indian tech job market has become, a young full-stack developer with just 8 months of experience was laid off on March 31 only to be offered the entire team’s workload for a meagre Rs 25,000 per month on work-from-home.
The techie took to Reddit to share the ordeal, and the post has gone viral with over 700+ upvotes and dozens of comments filled with frustration, advice, and warnings.
The techie wrote that the employer openly admitted there hadn’t been enough work that month and that full salaries might not be possible. The announcement came without warning, leaving employees blindsided and scrambling for their next move.
But the twist came right after.
The same employee was called in separately and offered an alternative: continue working from home for Rs 25,000 a month, slightly more than their previous Rs 23,000 salary.
On paper, it sounded like a lifeline. In reality, it came with a significant catch. The role now required them to handle everything alone—full-stack development as well as mobile projects—if and when work came in. What was once a team effort would now rest entirely on one person’s shoulders.
The techie expressed concern that such a heavy workload would be impossible to handle at that pay. The owner or as the techie mentions, Lala ji reportedly replied, “take 25K for now since there are no new projects, and that my salary would increase significantly once a new development project comes in.”
The developer accepted the verbal offer (no new offer letter provided yet), writing, “I accepted for now ( new offer letter not provided yet ) because the tech market is quite tough for someone with 8 months of experience as a full stack developer.”
The post quickly gained traction, with users weighing in on both the risk and the reality of the situation.
Many saw it as a temporary safety net, urging the techie to keep earning while preparing for better opportunities. Others raised red flags about whether such an arrangement would even count as legitimate work experience during future background checks. Some were more pragmatic, advising the employee to complete at least a year to avoid being labelled a fresher again.

And then there were those who cut straight to the point: don’t rely on verbal promises.
What this really reflects is a deeper shift in the tech ecosystem. Layoffs are no longer just about losing jobs—they are reshaping roles, expectations, and bargaining power, especially for those early in their careers.
