A professional found himself in a tricky situation while trying to switch jobs. He was caught between the long notice period required by his current employer and the joining timeline of a new offer from a major multinational company (MNC).

The man shared his dilemma on Reddit through a post titled, “Stuck between a long notice period and a new job offer.” His post has now caught attention online where users shared their different perspective on the situation.

‘Present Employer Not Willing To Relieve Me Early’

The person explained that his current organisation has a 90-day notice period. The new company expects him to join within 35 days. Keen on taking the new role, he submitted his resignation citing a personal medical situation.

“My current organisation has a 90-day notice period policy, but I have received an offer from a major MNC that requires me to join within 35 days, and I am very keen to take up the role. I submitted my resignation citing a personal medical situation, but my present employer is not willing to relieve me early,” he wrote on Reddit.

Despite this, the current employer refused to relieve him earlier than the standard notice period. To try and resolve the issue, the professional escalated the matter to the Head of Human Resources (HR) where he informed that he won’t be able to beyond December 1. He further told them that he is even willing to pay for the remaining notice period but the company didn’t respond to his request.

“If I proceed to join the new company on 2nd December, could this be viewed negatively or considered a red flag during their background verification process? Will I be considered absconded,” he concluded.

‘Serve It’: Users Advice On Notice Period

The post drew reactions from Reddit users where many highlighted the importance of following proper procedures.

One user cautioned, “Don’t do this…you’ll end up having an overlapped experience letter and your new company won’t buy your logic. Serve your 90 days notice period and move on with your life.”

Another user suggested verifying the employment contract before taking any steps, writing, “Please check your appointment letter terms conditions if your existing company allows you to buyout or not. If yes, you can officially write an email or a letter citing the terms. I think official communication will make them consider the request (but only if it allows as per your appointment letter or employment agreement).”

“Don’t screw this up. Your best option is to convince [the] large MNC to extend joining time. If your previous company decides to screw your BGV (Background Verification), your future employment is under jeopardy,” someone else wrote.

Meanwhile, an individual strongly warned about the risks of being on two payrolls at the same time. The user stressed that trying to escalate internally via HR or being on the payroll of both companies (especially if both have PF accounts) can create serious problems for future employment.
