Meta Layoffs: Meta is preparing to lay off nearly 8,000 employees this week in one of its largest workforce cuts yet, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg accelerates a massive restructuring of the company around artificial intelligence. According to a leaked internal memo from Meta HR chief Janelle Gale, employees across North America have been instructed to work from home on May 20 while the layoffs are rolled out. The cuts will reportedly impact around 10% of Meta’s workforce, which stood at roughly 78,000 employees at the end of 2025.

The memo, first reported by Reuters, states that affected workers will begin receiving emails at 4 AM local time in staggered regional waves. At the same time, about 7,000 employees who survive the cuts will be reassigned into four newly created AI-focused organisations designed to operate with flatter structures and fewer managers.

“We’re now at the stage where many orgs can operate with a flatter structure,” Janelle Gale wrote in the memo, describing the overhaul as part of Meta’s push toward “AI-native” operations. The restructuring also includes the cancellation of nearly 6,000 open positions that the company had previously been hiring for.

Employees laid off in the US will receive 16 weeks of base pay, along with two additional weeks for every year spent at Meta. Healthcare coverage and career assistance will also be included in severance packages.

Meta’s AI Pivot Reshapes Workforce

The layoffs come as Meta pours unprecedented amounts of money into artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company has projected between $125 billion and $145 billion in capital expenditure for 2026, much of it tied to AI data centres, custom chips and model training. Meta CFO Susan Li recently told investors that the company is still trying to determine what its “ideal” workforce size looks like in an AI-driven future where automation is rapidly changing productivity expectations.
